Your Company Data Could Be Worth $100K to $2M

AI companies are paying established businesses for real internal data: SOPs, knowledge bases, CRM records, project histories, QA processes and team communications. The documentation you already have can become a new revenue stream. If you want to sell, answer three quick questions to see if your company qualifies.

  • US companies first, then other Western markets
  • No new work, you license what already exists

DPMO Calculator — Defects Per Million Opportunities and Sigma Level

DPMO is one of the main ways quality teams measure how well a process works. It counts defects for every million chances for something to go wrong. This calculator works it out for you. Enter the number of defects, the number of units checked and how many opportunities for a defect each unit has. You get DPMO, defects per unit, defect rate, process yield and the matching Six Sigma level. Two more tabs let you turn a sigma level into DPMO and yield, or turn a yield percentage into a sigma level. You can include or remove the standard 1.5 sigma shift. A reference table shows the DPMO and yield for each sigma level from 1 to 6. It is useful for QA managers, Lean Six Sigma students and operations teams tracking process quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate DPMO?

DPMO equals the number of defects divided by the total number of opportunities, times one million. Total opportunities is the number of units multiplied by the opportunities for a defect in each unit. For example, 25 defects in 1,000 units with 5 opportunities each gives 25 / 5,000 x 1,000,000 = 5,000 DPMO.

What is a good DPMO?

Six Sigma quality is 3.4 DPMO, which means 99.99966 percent of opportunities are defect free. Many businesses operate between 3 and 4 sigma, or roughly 66,800 to 6,210 DPMO. What counts as good depends on how costly a defect is in your industry.

What is the difference between DPU and DPMO?

DPU, defects per unit, is total defects divided by units. It does not account for how complex each unit is. DPMO adjusts for complexity by counting each chance for a defect, so you can fairly compare a simple form with a complex product.

What is the 1.5 sigma shift?

The 1.5 sigma shift is a convention in Six Sigma that assumes a process drifts over time. Long term results are expected to be about 1.5 sigma worse than short term results. That is why 6 sigma equals 3.4 DPMO instead of about 0.001 DPMO. You can turn the shift off in this calculator.

How do I count opportunities per unit?

List every distinct way a unit can fail to meet a customer requirement and that you actually check. Only count opportunities that matter to the customer and that you measure. Keep the definition the same over time so your DPMO trends are meaningful.

What Counts as a Defect

A defect is any result that fails to meet a customer requirement. A unit can have more than one defect. A defective unit is different: it is any unit with at least one defect. DPMO counts defects, not defective units.

Use It Beyond the Factory

DPMO works for service work too. Count errors on invoices, missed steps in onboarding, wrong data in CRM records or support tickets reopened. Define the opportunities once, then track the number every month.

Short Term vs Long Term

Data collected over a short period usually looks better than long term results. The 1.5 sigma shift accounts for that. If your data covers many months with normal variation, some practitioners prefer to report without the shift.

QA Records Are Valuable

A history of defects, root causes and fixes shows how your business learns. Those QA records help train new staff, support audits and are a type of operational data that AI companies look for when they license data from businesses.
