Your Company Data Could Be Worth $100K to $2M
AI companies are paying established businesses for real internal data: SOPs, knowledge bases, CRM records, project histories, QA processes and team communications. The documentation you already have can become a new revenue stream. If you want to sell, answer three quick questions to see if your company qualifies.
- Open to every industry
- US companies first, then other Western markets
- No new work, you license what already exists

Some tasks in your company can only be done by one person. If that person left tomorrow, would the work stop? This calculator helps you find those weak spots. List the critical areas of your business, such as key client accounts, payroll, IT systems or core delivery. For each one, enter how many people can do it fully, how well it is documented and how much the business would suffer if it stopped. The tool gives each area a risk score, flags the critical ones and works out your overall bus factor, the number of people you could lose before something important breaks. Six common areas are filled in to get you started. Change them, delete them or add your own. It is made for owners, CEOs and operations leads planning for growth, a sale or simple peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is key person risk?
Key person risk is the danger that your business suffers if one specific person leaves, gets sick or is unavailable. It is highest when only that person knows how to do a critical task and nothing is written down. Investors and buyers look closely at it.
What is a bus factor in business?
The bus factor is the smallest number of people who would have to disappear before a critical part of the business stops working. A bus factor of 1 means a single person is a point of failure. The term started in software teams but applies to any company.
How do I reduce key person dependency?
Document how critical tasks are done, cross train at least one backup for each one and share access to key systems and accounts. Move client relationships from one person to a team. Review the list every six months as roles change.
Does key person risk affect company valuation?
Yes. Buyers often lower their offer or add earn-out terms when a business depends on the owner or one key employee. Showing written processes and trained backups for every critical area can raise the price and make a sale easier.
How often should I check key person risk?
Review it at least twice a year and any time someone in a critical role gives notice, changes jobs or takes long leave. Fast growing companies should check more often because new critical tasks appear quickly.
How the Score Works
Each area gets a score from impact, people and documentation. High impact areas that only one person can do, with nothing written down, score the highest. Adding a trained backup or a full SOP cuts the score sharply, which shows where a small effort pays off most.
The Owner Is Often the Biggest Risk
In many small and mid sized companies, the founder holds the key client relationships, the bank logins and the pricing know-how. That is the most common single point of failure, and the one buyers and lenders worry about most.
Documentation First, Then Backups
Training a backup is much faster when the task is written down. Ask the expert to write or record the steps, then have the backup do the task while the expert watches. Update the document with anything that was missed.
Written Knowledge Is Worth More
Every risk you remove by writing things down also builds a company asset. A business with full SOPs, project histories and process records is easier to scale, easier to sell and can even license that knowledge to AI companies.
